Happy New Year!

It’s 2021 and if you are reading this, you have something to be grateful for. I strongly believe that we can attest that 2020 was quite the year; an infamous, historic year.  It was eventful, exhausting, dramatic, traumatic, and eye-opening all at the same time.  2020 will be acknowledged for its chaotic symphony of disaster, political mayhem, race relations, economic unrest, and uncertainty about life.

Since the last edition, we are still amid a global pandemic, COVID-19. The number of those infected and the number of those who have died have drastically increased. There is still this battle of science versus what some believe to be fantasy.

We have a new President of the United States, Joe Biden. We also have a new Vice President, the first woman, and the first African American, Kamala Harris.   Unprecedented history has been made once again. During last year’s election we saw a record-breaking turnout of voters, who through voting, voiced the need for change, a restoration of character, values, and integrity.

Over the past year, we have seen the reality of people, especially in the political arena. I am a firm believer of the adage by the late Dr. Maya Angelou, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them.” The past climate was quite dark and intense. There was a burden carried where emotions were high, tempers volatile amongst some and social media played an intricate part in exposing the true feelings and disposition of what has already existed here in America.  Again, eye-opening indeed.

The safety, wholesomeness and sanctity of America is at the forefront of the American agenda.  It is time for healing to take place.  Integrity and character need to be restored. America needs a reset, with the ability to agree to disagree and live in peace.

There are still Americans who are unemployed, homeless, and struggling mentally, physically, emotionally, and financially due to job loss, unforeseen healthcare costs, and lack of opportunity in the job market.  Systemic racism in the marketplace has stifled those who are professionally qualified, but due to some bias, they have been deprived opportunities afforded to others.

As many have already planned resolutions and have incorporated new optimism for this new year, it is a great time to hit the reset button. This is not to say that the dreams and aspirations that you once had will go away, and somehow you must start a new list. It does mean that your perspective has shifted and the dreams and hopes of a brighter future for yourself is possible.

Now is the time to rewrite your story. A new chapter never hurts.  Self-evaluation of yourself and those around you are of the utmost importance, a cleansing of sorts. It’s never too late to start over.

I believe in the impossible becoming possible.

Spiritually speaking, I believe that things happen for a reason and nothing that we go through in life is sheer coincidence.  Life’s journey is about learning lessons, embracing hardship, enjoying the good and bad, and realizing that each moment we are allowed breath in our bodies, are moments when we should embrace the call of why we were put here. Serving this present age with purpose.  If you know better, you should do better.

This issue of Gary Jonathan Digital Magazine features two aspiring, energetic and on the move individuals in the person of Emmy Marshall, and Asia White.  Each one embraces creativity, entrepreneurship, and artistry. I am honored to feature them and their spirit. Thank you to each for being a part of this edition.

I leave you with a prayer of hope for even brighter days ahead. Enjoy this new year.  Don’t look at what you don’t have, embrace what you do have.

“Live and live well.”

I am,

Gary Jonathan
